Five Design Tips
I love working with neutral colors and always a fan of earth tones like shades of brown, yellow, green, and blue. The trick here is finding the right hue in each color and also an understanding of when to splurge and when to save. Here are a few tips from a design eye:
1. When it comes to painting the walls in your space the natural lighting can be your biggest obstacle along with finding that right hue. I recommend sample cans and just because a color looks great in one room doesn’t mean it will transfer to the next. Each room has a personality and will likely look different throughout the day so give yourself a sample can budget and time to get the color right.
2. Finding great furniture is key in multiple ways. Your home furnishings need to compliment the space in size and placement but also in comfort. Spending a little more for a perfect mattress, chair, or couch is priceless! This is something that should give you comfort every day and if you’re working with a smaller budget here’s a few ideas. Wait for that big sale or search the marketplace for good deals! This is when a designer who understands quality can be beneficial. Although you’ll pay for the service you will likely save in the end.
3. Think about texture. Creating a dynamic look can be accomplished with layering the right pieces. In the picture below I’ve taken a quality clearance chair from HomeGoods and layered it with sale throws. Plants are also a great way to finish a room and make it feel inviting.
4. Finding the right window coverings can be a way to save on your budget. I recently found shades at Lowes that appear to be the quality of Bali but cost half the price. Marshalls and Home-Goods also have great curtains for a discounted price. If you have an eye for quality you can save big here.
5. Give yourself room for error! Returning items and revising your original vision can be necessary to get it right. Although the task can be temporarily daunting…if done right the projects end result will be well worth it. This is your sanctuary and should resemble that in style and comfort!
